To work in the UK
as a registered nurse, you will need to register with the
Nursing
and Midwife Council
(formerly the United
Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health
Visiting - UKCC).

It
is highly recommended to fax or E-mail your request as it
is almost impossible to reach the NMC by phone
To apply
to the NMC you must allow considerable time,
since it takes 3-6 months for your registration
to be processed. As a rule, Australian and New
Zealand nurses must have one year's post graduate
experience and South African nurses need three
months. Nurses from other countries, such as
India, the USA and Canada or Eastern Europe have
different rules for being accepted. It is
important to understand that each application is
individually assessed.If you have insufficient
experience in certain specialist areas, you may
be required to do extra hours of training in that
specialty. We strongly advise, that
you do this in your home country as this can be
almost impossible to organise in the UK.

Please note that the NMC doesn't
accept Enrolled Nurses trained abroad on to their
register. You can still start to work in the UK though as
an Auxiliary Nurse Trained Abroad (ATA).
There are plenty of opportunities for ATA's in the UK.
In order to work
as a Registered nurse in the UK, an
overseas-trained nurse needs to:
be able to speak English
to a specified standard (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL)
be registered with the
Nursing and Midwife Council (NMC)
obtain an appropriate work
permit for the UK
obtain appropriate visas
for entry to the UK
have an offer of work
in the UK
You should note that UK
Employers do not usually take direct applications from
overseas nurses
The British Code for
Nurses and Midwives |
|
The
Code presents the
professional standards that nurses and midwives
must uphold in order to be registered to
practise in the UK. Effective
from 31 March 2015, this Code
reflects the world in which we live and work
today, and the changing roles and expectations of
nurses and midwives. It is structured around four
themes prioritise people, practise
effectively, preserve safety and promote
professionalism and trust.
Developed
in collaboration with many who care about good
nursing and midwifery,
|
the Code
can be used by nurses and midwives as a way of
reinforcing their professionalism. Failure to
comply with the Code may bring their fitness to
practise into question. This
